UIA INTERNATIONAL FORUM 2022: EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION
Registration is now available for the UIA 2022 International Forum ‘Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers’ to be held in Madrid, Spain from 18 to 20 May 2022.Until 21 March, full access to the Forum platform and tools and to the face-to-face event in Madrid is available for an early bird fee of 100€.  After 21 March, the fee will be 300€ for the same package. Online streaming access to the entire Forum (platform, tools and programme) is available for 25€.UIA Member Section Delegates participating in the Extraordinary General Assembly are invited to the Forum free of charge (according to the number of votes accorded to their Section), but streaming access will only be available through the purchase of online registration.More information

FRANCIS KERE: 2022 PRITZKER LAUREATEDiébédo Francis Kéré (Burkina Faso and Germany)is the 2022 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. Last year, Francis Kéré was named 2021 winnerof the UIA Robert Matthew Prize for Sustainable & Humane Environments and he received an Honourable Mention in 2011 for the UIA Vassilis Sgoutas Prize for Implemented Architecture Serving the Impoverished. Francis Kéré studied at the Technical University of Berlin, when he established the Kéré Foundation. In 2005, he founded KéréArchitecture, which has since been recognised nationally and internationally with awards, including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2004) and the Global Holcim Award 2012 Gold. Kéré has held professorships at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Yale School of Architecture, the Swiss Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio and TU München.Read the interview the UIA conducted with Francis Kéré in September 2020.More information

THE 2023 GOLDEN CUBES AWARDS LAUNCHEDThe UIA Work Programme Architecture & Children just launched the National Phase of 5th edition of the UIA Golden Cubes Awards. The triennial Awards “honour persons or institutions who help children and young people to understand architecture.”Attributed in four categories – InstitutionsSchoolsWritten Media and Audio Visual Media – entrants are invited to describe “activities (courses, classes, events, etc.) or products (publications, tools, games, kits, guides, films, computer programmes, etc.) designed to teach children and young people about architecture and the built environment.”More information

THE UIA 2030 AWARD: REGIONAL FINALISTS ANNOUNCEDThe international jury for the UIA 2030 Award, organised jointly by the UIA and UN-Habitat, has selected 43 Finalists, from 22 countries in all five regions, thus concluding the first stage of the Award’s inaugural edition. Architects from around the world submitted entries in six categories for built projects demonstrating both design quality and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). THE INTERNATIONAL ACCESSIBILITY SYMBOL COMPETITION: DEADLINE APPROACHESThe deadline for submissions to the competition for a new accessibility symbol, jointly organised by the UIA in cooperation with Rehabilitation International,  is coming up on 25 March. The competition invites professional architects and graphic designers as well as architectural and graphic design students to design a symbol to be proposed to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for adoption as the new international symbol of accessibility.See the brief Questions & AnswersSubmit a design here

The UIA joins its voice to that of the UN by celebrating International Women’s Day 2022 under the theme “Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow“, recognising the contribution of women around the world who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation and response to build a more sustainable future for all.UIA President José Luis Cortés congratulated women architects, recalling “unity to be my overriding goal as President of the UIA. It is therefore my honour to work with a UIA Council which this term is composed of 50% women, from all five UIA Regions. VELUX DAYLIGHT TALKS: FLORIS DE BRUYNOn 22 March at 18:00 (CET), you are cordially invited to attend, ‘Architecture as Theme, the second episode in the 2022 ‘Daylight Talks’ series, featuring practicing architect Floris De Bruyn, co-founder of GAFPA, based in Ghent, Belgium, and Professor at the KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture (UCLouvain). Organised by the VELUX Group in collaboration with individual schools of architecture and endorsed by the UIA and the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE), the Talks explore the significance of natural light in architecture and will present prominent architects and educators working consciously and qualitatively with daylight in their projects and educational programmes.Register and more information

UKRAINE: THE UIA EXPRESSES ITS SUPPORTOn behalf of the international community, UIA President José Luis Cortés expressed the support for all Ukrainian architects and condemned the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. In addition to these statements, the UIA has put together the efforts made by Member Sections and partners in support of Ukraine and have curated a compilation on the UIA website. This page will be regularly updated and UIA members are encouraged to send their contributions to the UIA Secretariat.
THAILAND:  ASA FORUMThe Association of Siamese Architects (ASA) under Royal Patronage is organising Architect Expo 2022 and the ASA International Forum from 26 April to 1 May 2022 with the theme “Co w/ Architects | Co w/ Creators: Collaboration between architects and others in the creative industry”. The event will provide an opportunity for architects and designers to exchange ideas, best practices and to explore various directions.Information and registration ITALY: BARBARA CAPPOCHIN PRIZEA winery in the historic Spanish village of Gratallops, “Clos Pachem 1507”, by H Arquitects studio (Spain) has won the 10th edition of the Barbara Cappochin International Architecture Prize. The Jury awarded three Honourable Mentions: “Versus” in Nantes by Titan; the “Viale Giulini Affordable Housing” in Barletta, by  Alvisi-Kirimoto, the “Cordoba Public Library”, in Cordoba, by Parades Pedrosa Arquitectos. More information
HUNGARY: INTERNATIONAL CONGRESSThe Association of Hungarian Architects (AHA) is organising an International Convention of Architecture in Budapest on 25 March 2022 on the theme “The nature of Architecture”, an examination on the evolving relationship between architects and their environment. UIA President José-Luis Cortés and UIA Region II Vice President Istelianna Atanassova will participate in the opening ceremony alongside Andras Krizsan, AHA President and Balazs Fürjes and Zsolt Füleky, Hungarian State and Deputy State Secretary, respectively.More informationHONG KONG: HKIA GOLD MEDALThe Institute of Architects of Hong Kong (HKIA) has awarded the HKIA 2021 Gold Medal to Patrick LAU Sau Shing. An “outstanding architect displaying profound knowledge and professional excellence” as well as an “inspiring educator”, HKIA honoured his impact as “instrumental to the advancement of the profession and even the society”, thanks to his pioneering of heritage conservation, green architecture and community-building.  More information 
IRELAND: NEW PRESIDENTCharlotte Sheridan is the new President of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). Co-founder of the Dublin-based architecture and planning practice, Sheridan Woods Architects + Urban Planners, she is an occasional lecturer in the Department of Planning and Environmental Policy at the University College Dublin and at the School of Architecture, Dublin Institute of Technology.  A longtime RIAI Board Member, she succeeds Ciaran O’Connor in the position.More informationSPAIN: NEW PRESIDENTMarta Vall-Llosera is the new President of the Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE) for the2022-2025 term. Formerly Vice-President of CSCAE (2018-2021), she served as Interim President following the passing of Lluis Comeron last January. An architect from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Barcelona, she held the position of dean of the Official College of Architects of the Balearic Islands from 2015 to 2022. More information
