The UIA calls for solidarity with Indonesia following deadly earthquake
On Monday 21 November 2022, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in West Java, Indonesia killing over 300 people. It has also been reported that the quake has destroyed  more than 56,000 houses and displaced 61,000 residents as many buildings were reduced to rubble.Indonesian President Joko Widodo declared the need to help those affected to rebuild earthquake-resistant houses.  Local authorities have reported that the number of displaced people could have been mitigated by working on proper infrastructure. The International Union of Architects (UIA), advocates for earthquake-resistant structures that are designed to make buildings stronger and/or more flexible. The Union particularly encourages the use of traditional techniques to prevent buildings from collapsing. The UIA, through its Architecture for All Work Programme, has developed Inclusive Design Guidelines for Architecture and Urban Planning when responding to natural disasters and emergencies. We would strongly encourage the rebuilding of communities affected by climate change and natural disasters to include climate resilience initiatives to mitigate the impact of  future disasters and build back better. On behalf of UIA President José Luis Cortés, Members of Council and Working Bodies, we extend our condolences and solidarity with the people of Indonesia and our Member Section Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia – IAI.
