2021 UIA GOLD MEDAL & PRIZESDEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS EXTENDED 
The UIAannounces the extension of the deadline for nominations for the 2021 UIA Gold Medal and Prizes to 12 April.The international jury for the 2021 UIA Triennial Gold Medal and Prizes includes Eva Jiricna (Czech Republic/UK), Kai-Uwe Bergmann (USA/Denmark), Victor Leonel (Angola), President of the Africa Union of Architects (AUA),  Nadia Somekh (Brazil), Presidente Conselho de Arquitetura e Urbanismo do Brasil (CAU) and UIA President Thomas Vonier (USA). It will meet virtually.The winners of the 2021 UIA Gold Medal and Prizes will be rewarded during an online awards ceremony held during the UIA2021RIO Congress in July.Only Member Sections and UIA elected officials may nominate candidates. ARCHITECTURE FOR ALL WORK PROGRAMME: TRIENhttps://www.nia.ng/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Scan_0001-1.jpgL AWARDSOn 15 April, the international jury for the 2021 Friendly and Inclusive Spaces Awards, organised by UIA Work Programme, Architecture For All, are hosting the second round jury meeting to determine the winners in the the following categories: New Buildings, Refurbished Existing Buildings, including Historic Buildings and Public & Open Spaces. (The jury for the fourth category, Research, has already met.)  COMPETITIONS 
AL NOURI COMPLEX COMPETITION: JURY MEETING126 submissions have been received from all architects around the world participating in the architectural competition for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Al Nouri Complex in Mosul in Iraq. The international jury will meet in the coming days to evaluate the entries and the winner will be announced during the month of April. The competition is organised by UNESCO, in close coordination with the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and the Iraqi Sunni Endowment and the support of the United Arab Emirates.Visit the competition website

COLOMBIA: PRESIDENT RE-ELECTEDThe Sociedad Colombiana de Arquitectos (SCA) has re-elected Alfredo M. Reyes Rojas for the period 2021-2023. The President has announced his intention to make innovation and productivity the axes of his strategy over the course of the period and will seek to consolidate regional leadership.  Graduate from the University of the Atlantic (Barranquilla), A. Rojas possesses experience in the formulation of land use plans, partial plans, urban action units and urban development in both the private and public sectors.   More informationSINGAPORE: NEW PRESIDENTThe Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) held its elections on 16 March 2021 and elected Lai Teck Chuan Richard president, succeeding Seah Chee Huang. After graduating from Singapore Polytechnic, he also studied architecture at Newcastle University, Australia, graduating in 1994. An active member of SIA for many years, he has participated on the BCA/SIA committee for the publication of prefab/sustainable architecture since 2003 as well as the SIA Research and Standards Committee since 2006.More information
NEPAL: NEW PRESIDENT The Society of Nepalese Architects (SONA) held its 26th Annual General Meeting and Election on 19 March 2021. Rajesh Thapa has been elected President for a two-year term, succeeding Anju Malla Pradhan. A 1978 graduate of Visveswaraya Regional College of Engineering in Nagpur, he is the founder of Architects Collaborate, Nepal.More informationKENYA: NEW PRESIDENTThe Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) held its 54th Annual General Meeting, at which it elected Wilson Mugambi president for the 2021-2023 period. A graduate of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), W. Mugambi is Co-founder & Managing Partner at Artcore Design Build LLP. The outgoing president is Mugure Njendu.    More information
CANADA: RAIC GOLD MEDAL & FELLOWS
2021 RAIC GOLD MEDALISTS: BRIGITTE SHIM & A. HOWARD SUTCLIFFE The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has declared Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe 2021 RAIC Gold Medalists, the highest distinction the Institute can bestow in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to Canadian architecture. According to Phyllis Lambert, Founding Director Emeritus of the Canadian Centre for Architecture: “The poetic quality and independence of their design work, their thoughtful and holistic consideration of site, materiality, typologies, the senses, and their inventiveness have made Shim and Sutcliffe exemplars of architectural practice in Canada.”For more information
RAIC 2021 HONORARY FELLOWS The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has announced four notable international architects as the Honorary Fellows for 2021Amale AndraosTatiana BilbaoMouzhan Majidi, and Thomas Vonier. The Fellows were distinguished for their significant contributions to both the architecture profession and society. The Officers of the College of Fellows at the RAIC praised the 2021 Honorary Fellows for demonstrating “excellence in our profession and the built environment through their work, their advocacy, and their commitments to the advancement of the profession“.More information

 PARTNER ORGANISATIONS ARCASIA: CGSA WEBINARThe Committee for Green and Sustainable Architecture (CGSA) of the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) helda webinar on 3 April 2021 entitled The Evolution of Urban Resilience and Sustainable Future. The event addressed the environmental, social and economic challenges aggravated by climate change. Ishtiaque Zahir Titas of the Institute of Architects of Bangladesh (IAB), Co-Director of the UIA Sustainable Development Goals Commission, was among the speakers.More information
ICOMOS: INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MONUMENTS & SITES On 18 April we will celebrate the International Day for Monuments and Sites, established by ICOMOS in 1982 and adopted by UNESCO during its 22nd General Conference. This year, the theme is Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures andICOMOSinvites its members, national and international scientific committees, partners, and the general public to mark the day by organising relevant activities.More informationDOCOMOMO: 16TH CONFERENCE 2020+1, TOKYOFollowing the decisions on 20 March 2021 of the official Japanese Olympic/Paralympic Committee made a decision to bar spectators from abroad, the 16th International Docomomo Conference 2020+1 Tokyo organizing committee decided to hold the conference completely virtually. UN HABITAT: ONLINE SESSION, 7-8 APRIL 2021The Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme will hold its first session of the year 2021 from 7-8 April 2021. The decision to hold the session online was based on the recommendation by the Bureau of the Executive Board of UN-Habitat during its meeting on 11 January 2021, based on the continued unpredictable global circumstances with regard to COVID-19 and measures put in place by the Government of Kenya, the United Nations and the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON).More information

Established in 1948, it is the only organisation representing architects across the globe working to unify architects, influence public policies on construction and development, and advance architecture in service to the needs of society.
